Give me 5 For Kids!!!

During the month of June, Sea Fm 101.5 & 95.1 will run its annual fundraising event. Sea Fm’s Give Me 5 for Kids campaign, where we will raise money for the Children’s Ward at the Rockhampton & Gladstone Base Hospitals. The concept was developed in 1998 on the NSW Central Coast, born from listeners ideas that if everyone donated just five cents, together we could raise thousands. Instead of funds being dispersed throughout the country as is the case with some national appeals, the money was used to purchase actual pieces of equipment as suggested by the nursing staff of the children’s ward of the local hospital

 

 

 

Back in 1991, a young Broncos fanatical Blackwater boy was ill with Leukemia.
Sadly at just 9 years of age in 1993, Ashley Parkin passed away however during his long periods of illness it was his love of the Broncos that kept his spirits high.

Ashley met and was known to many of the Broncos legends and he loved to watch them
Play. They were regularly the topic of his conversations. One of Ashley’s fondest memories was being on the sideline at State of Origin at Lang Park when Alfie kicked a field goal to win 5-4 and when the statue of Wally Lewis was unveiled.

His Broncos jersey, Paul Hauff’s training singlet and a Broncos ball signed by four of his favourite players Alfie Langer, Steve Renouf, Kevin Walters and Paul Hauff were his most treasured possessions and you have a chance to win these in a silent on-line auction.

After having been carefully stored away for almost twenty years his family has kindly donated Ashley’s treasured possessions to Sea FM’s Give me Five for Kids Appeal.
With tears in her eyes, his mother Sue Parkin lovingly handed over the Broncos memorabilia. Sue said that although very sad at parting with the items that were very dear to Ashley, her family had decided that Ashley would be proud for the money to go to the local children’s ward to help the sick kids of our local community.

A nurse from the hospital advised that with the advancement of medical treatment over the past 20 years, local children who are having treatment for Leukemia no longer need to have all of their treatment in Brisbane, some is provided by the Rockhampton Hospital which allows children to remain close to extended family and friends.

Sea Fm 101.5/95.1’s  Program Director Tim Aquilina said that Sea Fm is extremely appreciative that Sue, Jesse and Shania Parkin made the decison to donate Ashley’s Broncos memorabilia to Sea Fm’s Give Me Five for Kids appeal and is certain that there is an avid Broncos Fan out there that will be delighted to win.

As the finale to this year’s Sea FM’s Give Me Five For Kids appeal, Chooky and Brad will take the mobile studio to McDonalds’ George St Rockhampton  carpark from 6am Tuesday 29th to Noon on Wednesday 30th June.
